Welcome back to the second post within the Showpony Hair Extension series. If you missed the first you can Click HERE to read all about my journey.

How you look after your hair extensions will determine the overall health and appearance, as well as longevity of them. The European/Indian blend Showpony used in my hair is said to last around 12 months. But you need to be treating it correctly in order for that to be an accurate statement.

Now before you put this in your ‘too hard’ basket. You will be pleasantly surprised to know it’s actually very simple to keep these locks in tip-top shape. They recommend you stay away from hair products containing parabens, silicones and SLS/SLES.

Let me break that down for you girls… This means, that you shouldn’t be using products that contain garbage ingredients. Regardless of extensions you should be avoiding products with parabens, silicones and SLS on a daily basis. That’s why I think this is so simple!

The only other 2 ingredients that you really need to take extra care with are oil and protein. Oils can only be used on the lower mid-lengths and ends of your hair. But it must be kept well away from where the actual extensions are applied. Oil creates slip and breaks down the bonds that keep your hair extensions in place. (Basically…they will fall out! Which is something you don’t want to happen.) So be extremely careful if you were needing to use an Argan oil on the ends of your hair.

Protein is a huge no-no to use on hair extensions because it turns the hair frizzy and into a tangled mess!! It can destroy your beautiful hair completely in one treatment. You will always see protein in products advertised as “Repairing” or “Strengthening”. It is especially prominent in hair treatments! Protein is great in normal hair, but hair extensions go through an intense treatment process. This process means that unfortunately extensions cannot be exposed to protein once applied.

What I use in my hair

I like to keep it really simple when it comes to looking after my extensions. If I use products that I know have no nasty ingreidients and have been recommended to me, I know I will always be safe.

I use the complete Showpony Hair Care range, which was specifically designed for maintaining hair extensions.

This includes their 250mL Shampoo & Conditioner, Luminous mist, 100mL Argan oil.

On average I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. The hair washing routine remains pretty similar to normal hair. Just taking a bit of extra care around the extensions, try not to be too rough.

Celia’s little hair-care guide

  • Don’t go to bed with wet hair
  • Plait hair before bed to eliminate tangles
  • Rinse hair with fresh water after exposure to chlorine or salt water
  • Do not straighten over the tape
  • Use a Detangler brush = life made easy
